In January, Berean Academy hosted the 58th Annual Eli J. Walter Basketball Tournament, Kansas's longest-running girls' basketball tournament. This year was historic for the tournament as Berean added a boys’ division for the first time.
The first day of the boys’ tournament was also historic as Coach Lewis Wiebe won his 700th varsity contest as a head coach. Those wins include one year at Central Christian School in Hutchinson, his time in Oklahoma, and his 33-year career here at Berean. 700 wins is a rare occurrence and a testament to the character and dedication of Coach Wiebe. Not only has he amassed 700 wins, but he has mentored, led, and taught countless young men, showing them the love of Christ and discipling those young men in their walk with Christ. Family, friends, and former players were on hand to witness the moment as the Warriors defeated Classical School of Wichita by a score of 57-28.
Both the boys’ and girls’ teams competed well in the Eli J. Walter Tournament, with the boys finishing third and the girls finishing second. Senior Harrison Giger and junior Nolan Sweazy were named to the all-tournament boys’ team, while senior Taylor Balzer and junior Fionna Morgan were named to the all-tournament girls’ team.
On the tournament's final day, the Berean boys beat Bennington to earn third place. The Berean girls lost to Bennington in the championship game, finishing as the tournament runner-up.
