Advocating for School Choice

January 27-31 was National School Choice Week. A rally was held on Tuesday of that week in front of the Capitol building in Topeka, sponsored by the Kansas School Choice Organization. The goal was to have one thousand advocates for school choice attend the rally. Berean Board Chairman Joel McClenahan and I attended on behalf of Berean Academy. It was the largest school choice rally in the history of Kansas. Later that day, a bill was introduced in the legislature that would provide an $8,000 tuition tax credit for families wanting to send their children to a private, accredited school. That bill is expected to be voted on later this month. The average cost per student for public school education in Kansas is over $18,000. An $8,000 tuition tax credit is not too much to ask.

National surveys indicate that over 70% of voters now favor some form of school choice. There are currently twenty-six states that have some type of school choice option. I would love for Kansas to become number twenty-seven. The state of Indiana, where my wife and I resided for the past five years, has school choice. If enough legislators get behind the bill this session to override the governor’s expected veto, that could happen in time for the start of next school year! Please pray for this to happen. If you are willing, please also contact your state representatives to express your support for the bill. It’s well past time for the citizens of Kansas to be able to allocate some of their hard-earned tax dollars to send their children to the school of their choice. Proverbs 21:1 states: The king’s heart is a stream of water in the hand of the LORD; he turns it wherever he will. Let’s pray that God will direct “the king’s heart” to pass this bill into law.

February 5th was officially the one-hundredth day of the 2024-25 school year. It’s hard to believe we are well past the halfway mark of the school year!  “Time flies,” as they say, “when you are having fun.” We are having fun this school year, learning and growing in the Lord, and staying very busy.
